STRESS LESS .... written by Sylvia Marina
It is this time of year when people begin to think about the beginning of a new cycle, the forthcoming year. In the excitement of plans to fare-well the old and welcome the new, certain practices must change if we are to reduce stress and create a better future.
Excessive stress, at home and in the workplace has potential to interfere with a person’s productivity and have an impact on emotional and physical health.
During the past year, as well as consultations at my West Australia office, I have had the opportunity of working in different countries and cultures and here in Perth coaching, mentoring and training in small and medium size business implementing better business, better health skills.
There are two types of stress, eustress that’s the good stress, distress that’s the one to eliminate.
Discovering ways to eliminate workplace stress does not involve large changes, or brooding over career ambitions, it is more about concentrating on the one thing that is always within your control, yourself.
Many businesses experienced uncertainty and fear relating to the troubled economy. Learning new ways to cope with the pressure is required. I have been of value helping people learn better ways to communicate and better coping skills increasing their confidence and identifying when a negative seed is planted and how to rectify those situations. Manage anxiety, stop knee jerk reactions specifically when you feel misunderstood and wrongly judged. Build relationships. Learn how to manage increasing deadlines.
Feeling overwhelmed is a contributing factor to loss of confidence where a person becomes irritable and withdrawn, the result a decrease in productivity and effectiveness. Concerning too, the type of person with low self esteem and that person becomes the workplace noise/clown distracting others from their tasks – in both cases the work feels less rewarding and emotional and physical health symptoms become evident affecting the whole team.
And the quietness and solitude of home and family becomes a place of irritability. The toys on the floor that were once a welcoming scene now are seen as a mess. The children waiting for you to come home and bath them and have bedtime stories seem another chore.
social withdrawal happens
sleep problems occur
you become critical about food choices
muscle tension, headaches, apathy
low libido, loss of sex drive
fatigue, anxiety, irritability, depression
Now is the time to make change. Don’t allow the future to be a carbon copy of your past.
Change begins with your decisions.
Improve your communication skills. In the workplace people and their communication skills are your greatest asset. Increasing your team communication skills builds confidence, improves relationships and increases productivity.
Find the emotional intelligence that soothes your senses so you can quickly recognize stressful situations and become skilled at diverting them before they overwhelm you.
