HOW MUCH DO OTHERS EMOTIONS IMPACT YOUR LIFE?

HOW MUCH DO OTHERS EMOTIONS IMPACT YOUR LIFE? written by Sylvia Marina

I was a young medical trainee living in hospital staff quarters I remember the many moods that happened in the ablutions. Whether we were preparing to go on duty or freshening-up after duty or just getting going in the morning, the atmosphere that happened in that bathroom seemed to set the internal scene, sometimes for the whole day.

I know if I entered the ablutions and Dot was already in one of the facilities, she would be singing an upbeat Elvis number or one of the Seekers Songs. If one or more of the ‘South Pacific Island’ girls were leading the chorus they would be harmonizing their home island favorites.
I loved it and always joined in.

However, this behavior didn’t suit everyone, in particular those who wake up grumpy and still affected by yesterdays dietary or attitudinal toxins. And if theirs was the presence that grumped, scowled or muttered a grunt to you, yourself like me would consciously pull in your happy aura and subdue your ‘oh what a beautiful morning’ chortle for fear of having your nose physically or emotionally punched in.

I don’t know of anyone who did get a ‘physical bump’ but I do know everyone at times experienced the non-physical ‘not welcome’ signs.

These emotions didn’t stay in the bathrooms.

Primitive Emotional Contagion is defined as, the tendency to automatically mimic and synchronize expressions, vocalizations, postures and movements with those of another person and consequently, to converge emotionally.

Consciously and unconsciously, the people you live with, are influenced by your energy and attitude. In my youth a girlfriend and I often travelled together and this involved sharing a room. A major complaint about my behavior… according to her, I was always singing before I was even awake in the morning. I didn’t know I did this but I do know I always woke happy with a tune in my head which often seemed to come from the angels. Often just a tune and a feeling, no words!

I didn’t know I had this little idiosyncrasy happening but it sure annoyed my travelling companion!

You can't change what you don't notice.
Do you live with someone?
Your family, it is often easier to notice other people’s quirks than your own.
If their hints involve leaving the cap off the toothpaste or worse…don’t be stubborn or indifferent, it’s easy to change. Little changes make a huge difference within all relationships.

Negative emotions spread fast and they're highly toxic.
It pays to be aware of what we are feeling in any given moment.

The emotions people bring to the workplace are as important as their cognitive skills. This awareness is as important for the employee as the employer whose influence affect the performance of every employee, team leader, client and customer.

Emotional Contagion can take your whole team down and destroy relationships.

I learnt to keep a happy song in my heart and be in-tune with the timing of its vocal escape!
