FREEDOM TO BE

FREEDOM TO BE...  written by Sylvia Marina

I would like to paint the way a bird sings. ~ Claude Monet

It was early morning, hours before dawn and very dark outside. The birds were calling awakening their kind, awakening the day as I lay in bed listening to their sounds; it brought a sense of freedom, freedom to be natural, freedom to be free, free to express who we are, our story, and our song.

To express, share, communicate and sing, just because it is our birthright to do so.
What could be more liberating and free?

Living in a time when... if we are caught in the busy-ness of life where every minute, hour and second counts, where and when is our freedom?

Do you have freedom, true freedom or is your life like that of the confined elephant? Trained from a young age to know the weight and restriction of a heavy chain and as we grow, the belief that, that chain is heavier and stronger than our greatest intent is a debilitating belief that can hold you bound to one spot, until almost like Pavlov’s dogs were trained to respond on a given command.

Discipline has great value, but not if it crushes your spirit, your creativity, your song, your ability to say what you wish to convey.

How often have you admired the creativity, work or presentation of another and thought or verbally expressed “I could never do that”. In some situations that may be true but mostly such thought or comment validates the story of the elephant, the chain now becomes a restraint a limitation and simply a negative idea.

Similar to these statements...

I want to sing but...
I want to be free but...
I can’t ...

Such comments are strong affirmations affirming the chain of the past is strong and holding an assertion of authority, lies and debilitation.

I was a spirited child and my enthusiasm for life was often not acceptable to my foster family. So very often I was admonished and told to sit down and be quiet. I smile now because I the child knew the brutal repercussions of not obeying so I would sit down, endeavour to be still and quiet but inside my spirit and strong will was standing up and I knew that one day, I would know how to handle my enthusiasm and passion for living and learning.

As I endeavoured to live my life by choice not by others expectations, I found chains were attached. From past conditioning I needed to unlearn some stuff, disengage certain patterns of behaviour so that my instinctual knowing, new awareness and learning could happen.

It is enlivening to awaken and discover that by allowing new awareness and grace, freedom happens. Some days I feel the child within smile at the person I’ve become and my wish today is that you too will experience and know the freedom and joy of love and life.
